  • EC2 Compute Instance Family Lineage

Downloadable content showing the lineage of all AWS instance families. Whilst the EC2 Instance History blog post by Jeff Barr give a good starting point about instance history it misses some important parts. As a result I’ve recently spent some time looking at the history of each EC2 compute family and produced a downloadable lineage map showing how each of the five groups of families have evolved since the first release in 2006!

  • Windows 10 Iot Core Pi From Mac Part 1

So after winning a Raspberry Pi 2 from the “Growth hack” at a recent Internet of Things & Data event at Microsoft, Reading, I thought it would be only fair to try Windows 10 Core.
The official documentation requires you to have Windows 10 installed to get started however after a little research I was able install it on an SD without installing Windows 10 locally.

  • Aws User Group North 14

So this was the second AWS User Group North (#AWSUGN) I’ve attended after some unfortunate clashes with my calendar in the past.
Based on my experience it is a good opportunity to keeping up to date with the various changes in products on AWS and provides some good references for architecture and best practice.
There is usually pizza and drinks provided by a generous sponsor (this time the generous sponsor was Certivox).
Everyone is super friendly so don’t be a stranger if you are interested in attending the next one.
Here is a brief overview of both topics from the evening.

  • Worldpay Referer And Google Analytics

Regardless of the fundamental problems of 3D Secure (3DS) which often makes it highly criticized there are often cold hard cash reasons when e-tailers must implement it. Other times it is implemented by default by 3rd party hosted payment pages. Some implementation may create a bit of a mess of your Google Analytics account. Worldpay, I’m looking at you! This is how to fix it.

  • 127.0.53.53 == Danger, Will Robinson!

Back in February when looking into the new Top Level Domains (TLDs) I came across the proposed remedy for the expected name collisions. One of the key recommendations made was providing a safe way to alert those who would need to resolve a potential future DNS collision.

  • Has the smart phone race killed future innovation in smartphones?

Smartphone by definition are the high end of the mobile phone industry and highly desired by early adopters. They have however created an interesting problem with how smartphones are effectively financed via 24 month contracts. Ofcom recognise the high cost of these handsets has resulted in the ‘de facto’ standard contract length rising considerably to 24 months in their report The Communications Market 2012.

  • Did Facebook manipulate your emotions?

Academic research typically has ethics by design yet the recently published Facebook study has managed to short circuit the typical weights and balances expected to be applied. There are corporate style non apologies from an author of the paper and even Facebook’s COO uses a ‘nothing to see here’ approach.

  • What you thought about HTTPS is wrong – Server Name Identification (SNI)

    ##What you thought
If you learnt about https and TLS 5+ years ago you might be carrying around a huge, incorrect, assumption that you must have one IP address per host name you needed support. It’s true, as implemented TLS does not permit the server to know what the hostname of the HTTP request. This prevents the handshake to establish communication to be completed as the server does not know what private certificate to present to the client. If it did attempt to use a default certificate then a hostname mismatch would be the result.

  • Tesco – Wait for your number or shout louder

Recently I had to contact Tesco by email about a Tesco Clubcard account. Well I say email but that wasn’t an actual option as they don’t let you email them directly but instead use an online form. After submitting you receive a conformation email.

  • NFC – A whistle stop introduction to Near Field Communication

Late last year I put together this short introduction to NFC after recently discovered it myself. Whilst in some areas the technology is not any more developed there are some areas. More and more phones are supporting the technology and some of the confusion of multiple models having the same consumer name with and without NFC seems to have gone. With the recent launch of the iPhone 5s some have noted that it does not support NFC just like at the launch of the iPhone 5. Most comparable Android devices support NFC but Apples launch is yet another snub at the technology.

  • (Virtual) Mirror Mirror on the Wall – The fairest of them all

Retailers from John Lewis to Topshop are installing Virtual Mirrors in stores allowing customers to virtually try on clothes. The claim is that shoppers don’t have to deal with the hassle or time required to visit a fitting room to try them on. Will there be a digital equivalent to the ‘optimisations’ applied to real world fitting room mirrors such as tilting the mirror back by a small degree to produce a reflection more flattering to the viewer?
